New Otago recruit Matt Bacon has made a good early impression with a five-wicket haul to help Albion defeat Kaikorai by six wickets in the twenty20 final on Saturday.

The right-arm seamer has been named in a 13-strong Otago team for its season-opening Plunket Shield match against Canterbury in Christchurch beginning today and was deadly in his dress rehearsal, ripping through the top order to finish with five for seven from his four overs.

Scott Hunter (31) and Jeremy Smith (28) added 47 for the seventh wicket to give the innings some substance and get Kaikorai through to 107, while Otago leg-spinner Michael Rippon (25) was the only one in the top six to last more than six balls.

Rippon made a couple of breakthroughs with the ball but Daniel Duke (42) and Jack Coman (26) put on an unbroken stand of 54 to guide Albion to a convincing win with almost two overs to spare.

Earlier in the day, Albion thrashed Carisbrook-Dunedin by 88 runs to clinch a spot in the final.

Otago all-rounder Shawn Hicks smashed 42 from 20 balls to help Albion post an imposing 169 for six. Then Bacon took three for four to help dismiss Carisbrook-Dunedin for 81.

Green Island fell out of contention with a tense 13-run loss to Kaikorai in the early game. Rippon shone with the bat, clobbering an undefeated 94 from 64 deliveries to help Kaikorai post 192 for three.

Gregor Croudis kept Green Island in the contest with 69 from 41 and Blake Buttar-Scurr helped out with 43 from 33.

Green Island bounced back in the playoff for third and fourth with a three-run win against Taieri in a low-scoring game. Veteran seamer Dion Lobb nabbed three wickets.

North East Valley lost both its matches - a six-run loss to Taieri and an eight-wicket loss to Carisbrook-Dunedin - to finish last. Carisbrook-Dunedin claimed fifth place.
