Mr D'Alves' appointment coincides with the first Portuguese Catholic mass in the town, which was conducted by Father Michael Mahoney yesterday at St Joseph's Church.
Mr D'Alves was sent by the Agape church in Brazil with Juliane and children Nicoli (11) and Luiz (5) on a mission to set up a church in Queenstown, now recognised as a thriving centre of Brazilian population in New Zealand.
The family came from Curitiba in Brazil's Parana state.
Mr D'Alves will hold services at St Peter's Anglican Church every Sunday at 7pm and true to the spirit of Agape, all are welcome, not just Brazilians and Latinos, he said.
"The purpose of the church is to just get people to learn about God," Mr D'Alves said.
"This church is going to represent happy times."
The pastor will also hold services at the homes of his parishioners on Wednesday nights.
"We will follow the Bible and every sermon will feature a different discourse from the Bible," he said.
