Cruise-ship buses will use carparks

The forthcoming cruise-ship season will result in temporary changes to parking around Dunedin's Octagon.

Work on the Dunedin Centre and the closure of Harrop St has driven city council staff to find a different parking area to accommodate bus fleets expected on the days of cruise-ship visits.

City Environment general manager Tony Avery said passengers had previously disembarked and boarded outside the Municipal Chambers, but would now do so on the other side of the road.

To make way for the temporary bus stops, a taxi stand would be relocated opposite the Hoyts movie complex, resulting in no metered parks in the Octagon on cruise-ship days, he said.

Other bus stops considered included the Dunedin Railway Station, Moray Pl and the Octagon's central carriageway, he said.

As in previous years, a part of upper Stuart St through to the Octagon would be temporarily open only to cruise-ship buses.

Yesterday, council staff were notifying affected businesses, and Mr Avery conceded not everyone would be happy: "It is one of those things ... you can't please everyone."

In addition, tour buses waiting to take cruise-ship passengers around Dunedin sights would depart from the i-Site in Princes St.

A meeting to discuss the logistics of the forthcoming season involving stakeholders will be held on Tuesday.

The Dunedin City Council has confirmed each vessel will be farewelled by a piper or pipe band.
