Four arrests involve alcohol

Police arrested a 19-year-old Invercargill man on Wednesday after he allegedly tried to fraudulently acquire $500 of alcohol from a Betty's Liquor store in Beach St by posing as a staff member at a bar in the town.

Acting Sergeant Terry Wood, of Queenstown, said the man had been charged with obtaining by deception.

• A South American man and woman have been charged with assault following an early morning argument which resulted in the couple suffering scratches to the face and neck.

Acting Sgt Wood said police were alerted to the tourists fighting in their room at a Queenstown backpackers about 3am yesterday.

He said the couple had been drinking and would appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.

• A 29-year-old female was arrested for stealing from a Queenstown liquor shop she worked for, in what police suspect is ongoing theft.

Acting Sgt Wood said the woman was arrested on Wednesday night after allegedly stealing $47.

He said she was believed to have been stealing from the shop till for three months and police inquiries were continuing.

• A 22-year-old Australian man was arrested by a police patrol early yesterday morning for drunk driving after he was seen leaving a Queenstown bar and getting into his car and driving away.

Acting Sgt Wood said the man was stopped at 3am and breath-tested at 732mcg, almost twice the legal limit.
