A Wanaka waste troubleshooter called "Dr Compost" is now on call in Queenstown and will travel over the Crown Range to host his first workshop in the Wakatipu next month.
Solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said in a statement the delivery of the Queenstown Lakes District Council's waste management strategy included waste education for the community, especially schools.
Wanaka Wastebusters' Dr Compost, also known as keen gardener and waste-minimiser Ben Elms, and the council run a series of workshops each year, which are dedicated to the art of composting.
The workshops teach people the different methods available and how to build a compost heap guaranteed to heat up properly and decompose within a few months.
"The end product is beautiful, rich-smelling dark compost, the ultimate food for their gardens," Mr Elms said.
Mr Borowy said enthusiasts could email their composting problems to drcompost@wanakawastebusters.co.nz, or call the council with their questions.
They would get a response from Dr Compost within 24 hours, he said.
"Food and green waste should not be in the landfill, it should be helping our community to grow their own produce," Mr Borowy said.
Dr Compost workshops had proved a popular way of switching people on to the benefits of turning food waste into black gold, Mr Borowy said.
Dr Compost's first Queenstown workshop will be held on Saturday, October 23, at Queenstown Primary School, between 9am and noon.
Workshops are free, but a gold-coin donation would be appreciated.
