The call for measures to stop hoons damaging grassy areas at Brighton Domain has been answered.

But Saddle Hill Community Board member Scott Weatherall hopes the measures are removable so the public can use the area again.

Mr Weatherall said he was disappointed a grass area at the domain was turned in a muddy bog by motorists driving recklessly on it.

Muddy tracks, in tight circle formations, appeared late last week, he said.

‘‘I’m guessing some fellas from town have driven out in a 4WD and given it everything.’’The destruction had robbed families of a beautiful place to picnic, he said.

He wanted the Dunedin City Council to install temporary fencing to stop vehicles travelling on the area so it had a chance to recover.

Once the ground was dry, the council should flatten it and sow grass seed, he said.

Council parks and recreation operations manager Jendi Paterson said the damage at the domain was disappointing.

The council  planned to install bollards within two weeks to keep vehicles off the area, she said.

‘‘Remedial work will be undertaken to repair the recent damage.’

’Mr Weatherall said he hoped the bollards would be removable so once the grass had regrown, the area could be reopened so people could park vehicles there.

Those  parking on the area included freedom campers and rugby enthusiasts watching a game from their vehicles, he said.

Earlier this month, the council said Unity Park in Mornington was fenced off awaiting turf repairs in spring after repeated damage from motorists driving on the grass.
