Strong competition is being played out to host tests but the unique Dunedin venue has led to the stadium attracting another test next year.

Yesterday, New Zealand Rugby announced the venues for home tests next year, with Dunedin set to host the third test of the series against France in June.

Nelson will host its first test when Argentina comes to the top of the South Island, while Wellington and Auckland will have two tests each.

The stadium had hosted a test every year since it has opened, except for 2015, the year of the Rugby World Cup.

Otago Rugby Football Union general manager Richard Kinley said it was fantastic news to get the test.

``It is another test match down here and it is great to have a team like France. They're sure to be playing expansive rugby in the stadium,'' Kinley said.

``We worked really hard with the venue to present a really good package and I'm rapt for the Otago public.''

Competition to get tests was fierce between unions but Dunedin had the advantage of its roofed venue.

With a high chance of the weather going to be inclement in late June, having a covered stadium was a real advantage.

The All Blacks loved playing under the roof, Kinley said, and had enjoyed the whole week in Dunedin.

The location of the third Bledisloe Cup test next year is yet to be announced though it was scheduled to be in New Zealand.

Christchurch has missed out in hosting a test next year and in 2019 and Kinley said Christchurch was going to go through a debate over what stadium it would have.

He wished Christchurch all the best in getting its stadium.

Canterbury Rugby Football Union chief executive Nathan Godfrey said, in a statement, it was disappointing Christchurch had missed out on a test.

But it was an obvious signal that Christchurch needed to work on creating a world class venue to attract top sporting events, Godfrey said.
