ABs need to keep working for 80 minutes

The All Blacks clocked in last week but left the factory floor early.

All Black coach Steve Hansen said the side simply had to keep working for the whole 80 minutes this week.

''You've got to keep your attention on what you are trying to do rather than taking a big sigh and a breath. The opposition have got to keep playing so you have to, too,'' he said.

''The attention went to the scoreboard rather than the things we had to do right there and then.

''As a result of that, we threw poor passes, our skill execution was poor, our defence was poor. There wasn't too much that was good, really.''

The All Blacks are going to have to increase their intensity as Hansen expects a determined effort from the Wallabies.

''They will be desperate. With things in Australia, there is a lot of negativity. One of their responsibilities is to put some smiles on some faces.

''They'll be hurting so that will make them hungrier than they have been. They know if they don't get it right this week then there is the Bledisloe gone.''

The Wallabies were bound to be more physical than last week, Hansen believed.

The head coach said there was a chance to change the back three but the selectors decided to stick with Damian McKenzie, Ben Smith and Rieko Ioane.

With Smith going on sabbatical after this game, there was an opportunity for the likes of Israel Dagg and Waisake Naholo.

Hansen also told media prop Owen Franks is out for the game and could well have signed off for the rest of the 2017 season.

The tighthead prop has been struggling with an Achilles injury and tomorrow night was scheduled to be his final test for a while.

However, he will not front and has been replaced by Chiefs prop Nepo Laulala in the starting side. Wellington prop Jeff To'omaga-Allen joined the squad yesterday afternoon.

Laulala (25) played four tests for the All Blacks in 2015, but this will be his starting debut.

Hansen said he preferred Laulala to start ahead of Ofa Tu'ungafasi, with Tu'ungafasi more suited to a role off the bench, using his energy in the second half.

Franks has had a niggle with his Achilles all season and Hansen said it had now got to the stage where it could not be managed during the week to get him fit to play.

Hansen said Franks' injury had been described to him as the tendons in his Achilles being like knotted hair.

There were two options: to rest, train lightly and hope it gets better or have an operation.

Hansen did not know how long Franks would have to wait before making a decision on whether to go ahead with an operation.
