Ben Smith is days away from holiday but he is not leaping out the exit door.

Smith (31), the Highlanders co-captain and the All Black vice-captain, is set to play his final game of the year this Saturday night, at home under the roof against the Wallabies at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

He is set to have the rest of the year off but what he will do and when and where is still to be decided.

Smith is fully focused on the game ahead.

''I am going to think about that after Saturday. I just want to think about preparing really well for this week if selected and looking forward to the challenge of playing,'' Smith said.

Smith said he was glad to be at home and was sharing his time between the team environment and catching up with what was happening at home.

''I just want to have a really good week. It is exciting to be at home and I know the team is excited to be back at home.''

Smith said he was unclear whether he would come back and train with the Highlanders before Christmas or after Christmas.

After issues with concussion, hamstring, ankle and an inner ear problem this season, the body might well enjoy the break.

Smith said he was feeling fine now and was itching to get out on the field.

All Black assistant coach Ian Foster confirmed Smith had not discussed the finer details of his break as the game was the only priority.

''Ask us that question on Sunday. We have got a chance to win the Bledisloe.

''He [Smith] is a passionate All Black and is putting all his efforts into this. Come Sunday we will have a closer look at it and figure out what the plan is.

''But I'm sure he has got an idea of what he wants to do.

''But there will be things he will have to do in the background to make sure he comes back strong and fresh for the next couple of years.''

Foster said yesterday no discussions had taken place yet on who would replace Smith as All Black vice-captain for the rest of the year.

Smith will miss eight tests while on his break, which was part of the contract he signed at the start of this year.

He is signed with New Zealand Rugby until 2020.
