A house has been extensively damaged by fire in East Otago.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said six crews were called to the property on State Highway 1 in Goodwood, between Palmerston and Waikouaiti, from about 1am on Friday.
The crews were from Hampden, Palmerston, Waikouaiti and Willowbank.
When the first crew arrived, the house was well alight and the damage was "serious", he said.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze.
A St John spokesman said ambulance staff did not attend the incident.
It was not known if anyone was in the house.
A fire investigator would examine the house on Friday to try and determine the cause of the blaze.
A police spokeswoman said officers assisted with traffic control, as one lane of the highway was blocked as the fire was being put out.
