Easier is the lead track off the Dunedin band’s full-length debut album, due later this year, and follows EP’s Here We Go and 2016’s Albion Place.
The track signals a slight change in sound for the four-piece, a little less Sticky Fingers than anything from their self-titled EP and more hazy outback electro pop.
Over its four minutes, Easier takes a couple of key elements from the Tame Impala discography and distills them into a single song: there’s the emotional synth keys and falsetto-backed relationship breakdowns, "I feel like my life has been dissected in two, still it don’t get easier", while the rest of the track is a blissed-out and pre-party ready production before the psych rock referencing solo a la Innerspeaker.
The Shambles and recent OUSA Battle of the Bands victors, Jack Berry Band, will perform in support.
DUNEDIN DEBUT
Auckland raucous rock band Black Science makes its Dunedin debut tonight, celebrating the release of its new vinyl LP at the Crown Hotel.
The LP is jam packed with burning rock rave-ups, with pop melodies and big cheery choruses buried under distortion and delivered with reckless rollicking abandon. It’s one for fans of Husker Du and the SST Our Band Could Be Your Life Catalogue.
Edward Castelow, of Auckland indie pop outfit Dictaphone Blues, produced the LP.
There’s a great supporting cast too, with Dunedin sonic rock band Operation Rolling Thunder emerging for a rare show, and the solo talents of Glen Ross.
ONEFEST
Next week sees the return of Radio One91Fm’s annual Onefest event, this year presented as part of the Re-Oweek celebrations on campus.
As always there’s a stacked line-up of fresh and diverse talent on display, with Baily Wiley, MELODOWNZ, IllBaz and Jack Berry Band all featuring, alongside headlining Auckland outfit SoccerPractise.
The band’s latest single, Amene, has been enjoying a huge amount of student radio success recently, for a brief period topping the charts in Dunedin, Auckland and Christchurch.
As the band said at the time of the single’s release last month "Amene takes elements of electronic music, indie rock and traditional waiata and puts them though the SoccerPractise grinder to produce something hypnotic and new."
It’s a sleek and striking synth-backed dancefloor track, with Geneva Alexander Marsters’ superb te reo Maori vocal out front. It should be a great show!
