Lucas Olsen (13, left), of Dunstan High School ''B'' team plays Finn Holden (14), of the third-placed James Hargest College team during the Otago/Southland secondary interschool teams chess championship on Saturday.

Eleven teams from seven schools attended, including three from outside Dunedin.

The OBHS A team successfully defended its title, but was under severe pressure from the John McGlashan A team, until it pulled away in the final two rounds to win.

The contest for third was very close, and was claimed by James Hargest College on 18 points after a final-round 4-0 sweep of fellow Invercargill team Southland Boys' High School.

The three top teams qualify for the South Island finals in Ashburton, while OBHS A and James Hargest will also play for their provinces at the national finals in Christchurch.

John McGlashan's Martin Brook made a clean sweep winning his seven games.
