Any role good if it’s on the paddock

Even Richard Buckman likes the versatility.

Buckman, who turned 28 last Saturday and celebrated with a win over the Waratahs, is used to, and enjoying, being a jack of all trades.

He started off his Highlanders career with 17 games in a row on the right wing and made every post a winning one in the 2014 season.

He then became more of a midfielder and played second five-eighth for the side in its run to the title in 2015.

Last year was a write-off due to a dislocated shoulder but this year he has again looked good in the midfield.

This weekend, though, Buckman will be out on the left wing as Rob Thompson slots into the midfield and Tevita Li nurses a shoulder injury.

"Utility is what suits me. In at 12 or 13 but I just like getting on the paddock. There are things you have to work on differently," he said.

"Like the high ball you have to work on the wing or the defence in the midfield. But whatever role the coaches give me, I’m happy to play and happy to play in the weekend."

Buckman is bound to get some high balls tomorrow against the Crusaders but should be fine to handle it.

Working alongside All Blacks helped his game. He had high praise for centre Malakai Fekitoa.

"Mala is playing awesome at the moment. People said he had a bit of a slow start to the season but he has proved the doubters wrong and is playing awesome footy. His defence is unreal and he has always got your back.

"[Ben Smith] is just a true professional, he looks after everyone. He doesn’t get on the high horse. He comes and yarns to you if you’re a young fella or been here for a couple of years. If we can follow a bit of his lead or his confidence, I’m sure we can go a long way."

Buckman was happy with his own form.

"It is getting there slowly. A few little niggles did not help in the middle of the season but hopefully that is all behind me now and I can push on."

The Crusaders come into the picture this week and they are followed by the Lions.

The Lions is a match Buckman, the Hawke’s Bay man, is eyeing up.

"I guess it is in the back of your mind. The family and that are all coming down. I’ve got a sister in law who is English. She’ll be wearing a red jersey so don’t know if she’ll be sitting with the family.

"If I get the chance to play them it will be pretty special. It happens every 12 years, so that will be pretty awesome."
