A Blue shark was filmed on Saturday sliding beneath the surface of the Steamer Basin in Dunedin.
Shark Dive NZ director Peter Scott said it was not usual for such a shark to be seen so close the the city, but there had been more smaller sharks around this year because of fewer long-line fishing vessels and foreign boats working the coast.
There was a Blue shark seen near Andersons Bay recently, and it may be the same one, Mr Scott said.
The shark was unlikely to be dangerous, unless it was disturbed.
''Generally, if you leave them alone they're fine.''
The species were predominantly a fish eater, and would be chasing the likes of mackerel and salmon in the harbour.
