The race to fill the vacant seat on the Queenstown Lakes District Council is heating up,  a fourth candidate having put his name forward.

Semi-retired commercial lawyer Wayne Hudson announced he would run in the council’s Wanaka ward by-election next month.

He will run against Wanaka community board deputy chairman Quentin Smith, former councillor Jude Battson and design engineer Eddie Spearing.

Since moving  to Wanaka from Auckland in 2014, Mr Hudson has been actively involved in Wanaka’s business technology sector and has mentored local start-ups such as Tourism Ticker, kin-2-kin, Insiteful and MeMini.

Wanaka did not want to be in the same position as Queenstown and have to play catch-up on infrastructure issues such as roading, so long-range infrastructure and asset planning was crucial for the area, he said.

He is also a former president of  Cycling New Zealand and is  the president of the Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club.

Nominations for the by-election close at  noon on Thursday, June 1.
