Funding not 'key priority'

The latest funding round of the Government entity which has supported major community projects, including the Oamaru Opera House and the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, has been postponed until next year.

The Lottery Grants Board has decided to postpone the 2010-11 Lottery Significant Projects funding round, as it was not a "key priority", a spokeswoman said.

The fund was set up to help communities complete major projects with a capital expenditure of at least $1 million, in the areas of arts, culture and heritage, sport and recreation, conservation and environment, economic development, and visitor services and tourism.

The first grants were awarded for the 2008-09 year, and included $3,586,846 to the Oamaru Opera House restoration and refurbishment, and $1,363,668 to the Otago National History Trust for the Orokonui Ecosanctuary.
