King's side looks to be coming into its own

King's High School has exploded out of the blocks in the Otago premier schools competition this year.

The school has flattered to deceive in the past few years but with most of last year's team returning, it looks like it could be more than a competitive force this season.

It opened the season with a massive win over St Kevin's College and followed that up on Saturday with a 54-22 win over Otago Boys' High School Second XV at Littlebourne.

King's led 28-10 at the break but Otago Boys' came back well in the opening period of the second half. It attacked King's with plenty of fire but the visiting side managed to stand strong.

Eventually, King's came again and pulled away to win comfortably.

Midfielder James Te Pairi had a strong game for the victors, carrying the ball well and getting over the advantage line.

No8 Logan Taimaile was also strong when he got involved in play and got his side on the front foot.

King's made a few errors at the start of the second half but did not let that put it off its game.

In Oamaru, Waitaki Boys' High School grabbed bragging rights over the other Oamaru school in the competition, winning 29-6 against St Kevin's College.

In what was a scrappy match, Waitaki led just 10-6 at the break but pulled away in the second half and managed to get a bonus point.

There were some good efforts from Waitaki Boys' High School first five-eighth Jake Matthews and lock Paddy Henwood.

In other games, John McGlashan College recorded its second win in a row when it travelled to Balclutha and defeated South Otago High School 35-0.

Mount Aspiring College had an encouraging win in Mosgiel over Taieri College 29-14 while Dunstan High School scored its first win of the season, beating Kavanagh College at Hancock Park 55-5.

King's and Waitaki Boys' will clash in an interschool game, which will double as a competition fixture, in Oamaru on Wednesday.
