AOS squad called out

An altercation between two flatmates sparked an armed offenders squad (AOS) callout in Invercargill yesterday.

Police were called to an Ettrick St property at 1.30pm following reports windows had been smashed and shots fired.

A large cordon was put in place around the Appleby area, and members of the AOS deployed to the area, Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said.

A vehicle was stopped trying to leave the cordon shortly before 3pm, with one passenger taken to Southland Hospital with hand injuries.

Snr Sgt Raynes said the man received the injuries after smashing several windows of the flat following an "altercation" with a flatmate.

A search of several addresses by the AOS failed to locate a firearm, and it was unlikely one had been used, he said.

A 26-year-old man, who was also in the vehicle, was charged with breaching bail and would appear in the Invercargill District Court today.

Further charges were likely, he said.
