The Clutha District Council district assets committee will meet tomorrow to consider recommending to the council that the Tuapeka Mouth pedestrian bridge be moved to Gabriels Gully as part of the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board's Gabriels Gully walkway project.
The community board has two uses for the bridge as part of the walkway, and would like to have the crossings in place for the Gabriels Gully Goldrush 150th anniversary celebrations next year.
However, the bridge is also being claimed by the Tuapeka River Gold Trail (TRGT) working party, and spokesman Roger Hodgkinson will address the district assets committee during the public forum, stating the bridge should not be removed from Tuapeka Mouth, where it has the most historic significance.
The TRGT working party claims it has a valid use for the bridge as a pedestrian/cycle bridge over the Tuapeka River.
This would be an integral part of the proposed Tuapeka Mouth loop walkway/cycleway.
Manager district assets Jules Witt said the bridge was owned by the council and was managed as a roading asset, which was why the matter had been put to the district assets committee.
