Racing: Ray expected to be in the spotlight

The spotlight will be on Ray when he returns to racing at Addington tonight.

The Tim Butt-trained trotter has won eight of his 13 starts, all at Addington, but he has not raced for 21 months. He has been on the sideline after twice having bone chips removed from a knee.

He ran a close second to King Charlie in a workout at Rangiora last Saturday.

Ray won four from six starts as a 3yr-old. He won at the New Zealand Cup meeting in 2008.

The Butt stable has Stunin Cullen, Raglan and Cullen's Creek in the main handicap tonight.

Stunin Cullen returned to racing with a stylish win last Friday at Addington.

Raglan won the Northern Southland and Amberley Cups last season after joining the Butt stable in the spring. He won a workout by a head from Cullen's Creek last Saturday, the last 800m in 56.9.

The Big Mach, another member of the Butt stable was also a workout winner. He resumes in race 2.

• Auckland Reactor is a week into four weeks quarantine in Kentucky preceding his return to New Zealand. He will be based at the Stallion Station in Christchurch for stud duty. It has yet to be decided if he will undergo surgery for a throat problem and return to training.

• Jim Cassidy was suspended for two days and fined $1000 for breaching the whip rules after he won on Needwood Lad at Canterbury on Wednesday, AAP reports.

Needwood Lad won by half a head. Stewards found Cassidy guilty of using the whip in consecutive strides more than allowable before the 100m.

Cassidy will miss the two-day Wyong Cup meeting next week. He will be able to ride at Flemington on September 4.

Cassidy said he was scheduled to ride Love Conquers All in the Gilgai Stakes and Danleigh in the Makybe Diva Stakes that day.
