The agency called for feedback on a proposal to permanently lower the speed limit from 100kmh to 80kmh along a 2.3km stretch of the highway between the Shotover Country roundabout and Hardware Lane, near Queenstown.
Crash figures for 2011-16 showed 18 reported crashes resulting in three serious and 13 minor injuries.
NZTA Southern business unit manager Ian Duncan said the agency received slightly more than 170 submissions after feedback closed late last month, the majority in favour of the proposal.
Many of those people also sought further safety improvements at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Tucker Beach Rd.
Mr Duncan said that was "not unexpected" given the community had already raised concerns about the safety of that intersection.
"Lowering the speed limit through this area is one of the measures to increase safety ... Tucker Beach Rd provides access into Quail Rise with the local community the major users of the intersection.
"We have met with representatives of the local community about this issue.
"The discussions were constructive, and our intention is to talk with them again in the next few weeks about safety improvement options at this site, in addition to the speed limit change."
Various legal process would now be followed to put the new speed limit in place, which was expected to occur by early next month.
However, those who submitted on extending the reduced speed limit to the Crown Range Rd turn-off, or the existing 80kmh limit near Lake Hayes, were unsuccessful in their petitions.
"This will be considered by the transport agency at some point in the future, but not as part of this proposed speed limit change, which is only focused on State Highway 6 between Stalker Rd and Hardware Lane," Mr Duncan said.
