Yesterday was the city's fourth wettest April day since records began in 1918.

Niwa climate scientist Gregor Macara said 56mm of rainfall was recorded in Musselburgh, Dunedin yesterday.

It was "a notable day of rainfall, despite the apparent lack of flooding", Mr Macara said.

The city came through the soaking with no flooding, authorities said this morning.

No residents were evacuated and MetService today lifted the heavy rain warning for the city, North Otago and Clutha.

Rain was expected to ease from lunchtime, but return this evening and into tomorrow.
