Uptake of a new car-pooling scheme in Queenstown is low, but demand should increase over time, its designer says.

Queenstown Lakes District Council infrastructure principal planner Tony Pickard said 39 residents had been issued with permits, but it was up to them to make their own car-pooling arrangements.

"We expect demand for car pool permits will increase over time. It’s a long-term initiative."

Regulatory manager Lee Webster said parking officers were patrolling the reserved parks and issuing tickets to non-permit holders.

Registrations remained open and the council would continue promoting the scheme, which started on March 13.

The scheme allocates 29 spaces at the  Boundary St and Ballarat St car parks for vehicles with at least three permit-holders aboard.
