First 50 points for 15 years

The Highlanders racked up 50 points last Friday night, finally breaking a drought during which they failed to reach the half-century mark.

The side beat the Rebels 51-12 at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Friday night and with it scored a bonus-point win.

The Highlanders scored six converted tries to beat a woeful Rebels team. Add in three penalties by Marty Banks and the home side collected 51 points.

Hooker Greg Pleasants-Tate scored the final try, getting over the line after the fulltime hooter had sounded. With replacement first five-eighth Fletcher Smith knocking over the conversion, the side went past the 50-point mark.

It was a more than comfortable win for the side and the first time the Highlanders had scored more than 50 points for 15 years.

The previous time was in Pretoria on March 24, 2002, when they beat the Bulls, 54-17.

Highlanders coach Tony Brown played for the side that day when all eight tries were scored by backs.

The Highlanders have played 222 games since that half-century in Pretoria.

The side has come close to getting to the half-century mark a few times and nine times it has posted 40 points or more.

Last year, it scored 48 points in beating the Kings in Port Elizabeth and the year before it scored 48 points in beating the Sharks at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

In the forgettable 2013 season, the Highlanders actually scored 49 points in beating the Hurricanes in a high-scoring game between two sides which failed to reach the playoffs. From 2006 to 2010, the Highlanders did not even reach the 40-point mark.

The biggest score the franchise has tallied was 65 when the side beat the Bulls 65-23 in Invercargill in 1999.

It has actually conceded 75 points. In 1997, Sharks fullback Gavin Lawless scored 50 points himself in his side's 75-43 win in Durban.

The big win on Friday night was a boost for not only the confidence of the side but also for the points differential.

Before Friday night's match, the Highlanders had scored only 91 points from five games, scoring just eight tries, although they have played the other four New Zealand teams.

Before Friday night's game, they had a negative points differential of 29 but they are now in the positive by 10 points.f
