Three people have been injured after a four-wheel-drive vehicle collided with the side of a freight train at an East Taieri level crossing.

The accident happened about 6.40pm next to the intersection of Riccarton Rd East and Gladstone Rd South, where the main trunk railway line crosses Riccarton Rd West.

All three occupants of the vehicle were out of the car and walking, but no other information about their injuries was available yet, a St John spokesperson said.

The vehicle had sustained heavy frontal damage, and the train had stopped about 80m down the track, towards Mosgiel, an Otago Daily Times photographer said.

Police and firefighters remained at the scene and Riccarton Rd East was closed to traffic, as was the intersection next to the crash scene.
