The Otago Daily Times has learned former Law Society Otago branch president and Gallaway Cook Allan partner David Robinson has been appointed Dunedin-based coroner.
Mr Robinson will be sworn in next Friday.
He replaces Brigitte Windley, who will return to Wellington, after being appointed coroner in November 2015.
She in turn replaced long-standing coroner David Crerar, who was appointed in 1979.Mr Robinson is a graduate of the University of Otago and has since taught at his alma mater.
He was born in Otago and has been a partner of Gallaway Cook Allan since 2006.He also spent a year as the Law Society’s Otago branch president.
Ms Windley signalled her intention to leave the Dunedin position in September last year after her husband could not find work in the city.
She will return to a coronial position in the capital.
The Office of the Attorney-general refused to comment on or confirm the appointment when contacted by the ODT.
Mr Robinson declined to speak until the attorney-general commented publicly.
