Scottish crime writer Val McDermid entertained fans on Saturday with a reading from her new novel, Trick of the Dark.
The free event, organised by the University of Otago's Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies, was held at the Otago Settlers Museum, and attracted about 100 people.
Afterwards, she took questions from the floor, telling the audience crime writing had changed, and people expected character development in crime novel series.
Expectations had changed greatly since the days of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, who seemed to remain unscathed despite the shocking crimes she had solved, McDermid said.
