The Otago Badminton Association is holding an open day tomorrow for those who want to have a go at the sport. The open day will be at Badminton Hall in Victoria Rd from 2pm-5pm.
Otago Badminton Association chairman Nathan Pitcher said the sport was growing and 35,000 children throughout New Zealand were going through the Kiwi Shuttle programme, which taught youngsters the basics of the game.
Badminton was a sport which taught good hand-eye co-ordination, which was vital in so many sports, he said.
The sport was popular among all age groups from school children to pensioners.
The association had just renovated the changing rooms at Badminton Hall, spending about $30,000 for new showers and rooms, with support from the Lion Foundation, Otago Community Trust and the New Zealand Community Trust.
The association is in the process of refitting court lighting configuration to LED lighting.
The national masters championships is set to be played in Dunedin from August 31 to September 2 this year, which should bring an influx of players into the city.
