17 entries in tonight's community awards

The 2010 TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards will be announced in Queenstown tonight.

The awards, at the Mercure Resort, begin at 5.30pm.

The supreme winner will receive $1500, and a trophy.

They will also be given an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards in Tauranga in March.

The supreme winner will be filmed by a TVNZ 6 crew to feature in a new television series called Volunteer Power.

The community group named supreme winner would also win a six-month subscription to Fundraising in New Zealand magazine, New Zealand's only monthly publication dedicated to all things fundraising.

Seventeen groups were nominated for this year's awards, ranging from PTAs to RSAs, animal clubs and garden clubs.

The awards cover five categories - heritage and environment, health and well-being, arts and culture, sport and leisure, and educational and child/youth development.

Category winners will receive $500, and runners-up $250.
