Ranfurly's 2008 Rural Art Deco Maniototo event is officially open, after last night's launching at the Ranfurly Lion Hotel, followed by a showing of artist in residence Jill Studd's work.
The annual four-day spectacular is held to celebrate the town's Art Deco heritage, allowing residents and visitors to don 1920s and 1930s attire, dance to music of the time, and sip cocktails.
Tonight, at the Maniototo Park Stadium, cabaret attendees can enjoy the music of the Calder Prescott Dixie Band and the X-Factor show band.
Art Deco fans can swing in style on the golf course, at the Ambrose Pairs match during the day today.
Tomorrow's programme is packed with events and attractions for all ages, with a car rally drawing crowds in the morning from 11am, followed by a market day and picnic, during which the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra will play at the Ranfurly Railway Station.
Stalls, street entertainment country music, and a fashion show will also entertain the crowds during the early afternoon, after which a procession comprising a pipe band, cars, tractors, and stilt walkers will make its way along the town's main street.
High tea at the Ranfurly Lion Hotel will start seating at 2pm while a magic show for the children takes place at the railway station.
Entertainment will continue through the evening, with a ‘‘Bathing Belles'' competition at 5pm, followed by street stage musical entertainment until about 9pm.
On Sunday morning, Art Deco revellers will have the opportunity to attend a special church service held at the railway station.
