Footpaths upgraded

The upgrade of kerbing and footpaths in Tarbert St in Alexandra is due to be completed within two weeks.

Central Otago District Council roading manager Julie Muir said Fulton Hogan, the council's contractor for roading work, was replacing broken kerbs and renewing the asphalt paths and the footpath around the monument.

The paths would match the work done in Tarbert St a year ago.

It included some minor street furniture work, including rubbish bins and noticeboard upgrades.

"We will be widening the path near the Kiwi Milk Bar to accommodate outside dining.

"The slope of the path near the Kiwi will be altered to make it more user-friendly."

Minor drainage improvements were also being undertaken, with the total cost of the latest work about $96,000.

This would finish off improvements in the Tarbert St area, although Ms Muir said the latest work was not part of the town centre upgrade.

"It's work we would have done anyway."

Shopkeepers had been very supportive, she said.
