Stage one of the $1 million redevelopment of Cromwell golf course is on schedule.

Les Topping, project manager of the redevelopment for the Cromwell Golf Club, said stage one was on track to be finished next month.

The course's full 18 holes were expected to reopen in December, after a "grow in" period during spring.

The first stage of the four-stage project involves remodelling and realigning what used to be holes 14 to 18, which either border or are close to Neplusultra and Alpha Sts.

Only 13 holes are open to play.

Stages two to four involved moving greens and no holes would be closed.

The work was to alleviate concerns about public and player safety.

The Cromwell Community Board agreed to put more than $700,000 towards the project on the condition the club came up with the other $300,000.

Cromwell Golf Club manager Graham Mercer said the club is was planning initiatives to fund its share of the cost.

The Central Lakes Trust gave $21,000 towards new irrigation infrastructure.

The course has been designed by Otago golfer Greg Turner's company Turner Macpherson Golf Design.

Queenstown company TIC Projects has the contract for the work.

Students from Otago Polytechnic's sports turf management programme, based in Bannockburn, have also been involved in the work.

There will be an open day at the club at 5.30pm on August 27.
