Challenge Wanaka volunteer manager Jo Guest (right) and deputy manager Perryn Lydford  try to recruit more volunteers for the event on the Wanaka lakefront yesterday.

The pair are still looking for at least another 200 volunteers to help assist the 1600 athletes expected to compete in the triathlon next Saturday. Overall, the event needs about 500 volunteers.

Roles included packing up and packing down the event, road marshalling, helping at water stations and helping at the finish line.

Ms Guest said there were still spaces available to suit everybody.

One area where more volunteers were needed was at the aid stations between 5pm and 10pm, to help encourage the athletes as fatigue started to set in. As a charitable trust, the Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust depended on the the goodwill, skills and valuable time of volunteers, she said.

"It’s great fun and you meet loads of interesting people.

"You get to eat some great baking too."

Anyone keen to volunteer can sign up on the Challenge Wanaka website www.challenge-wanaka.com/volunteer or email volunteer@challenge-wanaka.com.
