More than 100 residents from Hawea Flat, Lake Hawea and the surrounding area took part in the celebration, which has been running since 2005.
Event organiser Collen Carr said the idea behind the day was for the Hawea community to come together and celebrate Waitangi Day as a community.
``It's about coming together on our national day ... We did our duty and sang the national anthem.''
Community was important to people living in the Hawea area and it showed in the number of people who turned out in the rain, Mrs Carr said.
``In 12 years this is the first time it has rained, so it's not too bad really.''
Wet weather did not put a dampener on the festivities, which included a tug-of-war, lolly scramble and tennis ball catch with the balls being shot out of air cannons.
