Hundreds of vintage tractors and rural machinery rumbled into Edendale at the weekend to take part in the annual Crank Up event.

The two-day event was organised by the Edendale Vintage Machinery Club.

Site convener Sharron Caughey said there was a pretty big crowd of people on the first day as the sun drove away any sign of rain from the week before.

"A few people would have been sunburnt, even though we had free sunblock available, which was well partaken in."

Crank Up is a family-focused country fair event with entertainment on both days.

Displays on the "fantastic" first day included novelty tractor events, shearing displays, a rescue helicopter flight tour and  a novelty "spud race".

It was a chance for those in vintage machinery clubs to "crank up" their old machines and owners travelled from several southern vintage clubs and Canterbury, as well.

However, rain came down on the second day which left the field a muddy mess.

Mrs Caughey said it was a shame as a few gazebos had to be taken down and some displays were cancelled, such as the one by the fire brigade.

"There’s enough water out there without them adding to it," she said.
