Balclutha and Kaitangata volunteer fire services were called to the fire on private property near the end of Macrocarpa Rd about 1pm and the Otago Rural Fire Authority took over fighting the blaze later in the afternoon.
Otago Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Phil Marsh said the fire covered one to two hectares of land.
Two helicopters were called to dampen the area and contain the blaze.
At the fire's height, two tankers and two appliances attended the site to work with the helicopters.
Wind gusts up to 50kmh threatened to drive the fire into a block of pine forest.
It was always a worry for firefighters working in windy conditions as the flames could spread into other plantations, Mr Marsh said. It was good the fire authority was still able to fly the helicopters safely into the area.
``They've done a very good job in preventing it getting into the forestry block.''
Mr Marsh understood the fire had started among some slashed and pruned pine trees.
Mr Marsh said the Fire Service was focused on controlling the fire. Its cause would be determined later.
Whether a fire investigator was needed would depend on the preliminary findings from the incident controller on site.
Firefighters worked into the evening to ensure the fire was well contained and there were no hot spots.
