Holiday cricket refreshes

The Highlanders resume training today and that probably means Matt Faddes has played his last game for the Clutha Comets this season.

The talented centre was a pretty handy cricketer growing up but gave the sport away when he was "16 or 17" to concentrate on the oval ball code.

But the 25-year-old made two appearances for Clutha in the Vincent competition during the Christmas break.

He opened the bowling on Saturday and took one for 18 from eight overs. The batting did not go so well, though. He was run out without facing.

And, earlier, Tim Grant scored 104 to help the Waihola Swans achieve their first premier win since rejoining the competition after a lengthy absence.

"I guess I haven’t been told not to," Faddes responded when asked if he was allowed to dabble in cricket.

"I played during high school but rugby has taken over. I used to go pretty hard at it. Did a bit of representative stuff early doors.

"But I suppose when I was about 16 or 17 was when I stopped playing. With sevens being a summer sport, it took over."

The right-armer said he was lucky he did not have to bowl to Grant much and had held back a little.

"There was one guy that scored a ton and I only bowled three balls to him."

Faddes did not push himself to his "absolute limits", which is just as well, as the first day back at the Highlanders after Christmas can be a bit brutal.

"I don’t know if I’ll get another game in. But getting back out there and playing some competitive cricket was quite refreshing and quite nice."
