Unsettled weather and waiting for a turf contractor meant the opening of the turf had been delayed by about four weeks.
Wanaka Recreation Centre team leader Angie Calder said she was very pleased with quality of the turf and only the surrounding paths were left to be completedConcrete for the paths was expected to be laid yesterday which meant the turf would be available for bookings on December 26.
About 6500 people had used the $13.9millon sports facility since it was officially opened in July.
Two sports fields next to the artificial turf had been seeded and, depending on grass growth and the weather, would open in March.
