The Otago Volts have held on to beat Central Districts by one run in a dramatic twenty20 fixture at Pukekura Park tonight.
Otago posted a New Zealand record score of 249 for three but former Sri Lankan international Mahela Jayawardene smashed 116 from 56 deliveries to get his side into a winning position.
He holed out with victory in sight leaving Tom Bruce and Dane Cleaver to finish off.
The pair needed nine to win from the last over and then two to win from the last ball. But Otago's Neil Wagner produced a good delivery and Cleaver was run out trying to scramble a single.
Earlier, Hamish Rutherford whacked 106 from 50 deliveries to set up the massive run chase.
