The small joss house, or Chinese temple, was originally in Maryport St, Lawrence, after it was moved there last century from a Chinese settlement.

It was moved back to the settlement from Lawrence on December 2. The historic settlement was formed during the Otago gold rush, after Chinese were prohibited from living in Lawrence and were given a block of land to live on.

The Lawrence Chinese Camp Charitable Trust bought the land in the 1990s to restore the village to its former glory. The joss house was put next to the former Chinese Empire Hotel.

The trust aims to renovate the house and reconstruct other parts of the historic settlement.
