A good Samaritan spread Christmas cheer in Dunedin by taping change to a parking machine yesterday.

Tony McCabe had found a park on Great King St outside Otago Museum, where he was taking his two children, about 1.30pm when he noticed the two $1 coins taped to the front of the machine.

Seeing the coins brightened his day.

``People whinge about so much stuff this time of year and everyone's getting grumpy with traffic.

``So it's nice to see something nice happen for no particular reason.

``There was no note or anything, nobody claiming any sort of kudos for it, it was done just out of the goodness of someone's heart.''

Mr McCabe paid for his park leaving the coins for someone else to use.

He shared a photo of the coins taped to the machine on social media where, to his surprise, it gained more than 600 likes.

``Obviously it struck a chord.''
