Teaching first-aid skills to people with mental illness and intellectual disabilities is a confidence-builder as well as having a practical value, says Pact educator Matthew Peppercorn.

Pact, which supports about 800 clients in Otago, Southland, and the West Coast, last month launched a programme for their clients to do a special first-aid course.

First Aid Solutions has devised a special mini-certificate for Pact clients focused on the basics of first aid.

Mr Peppercorn said it could be a stand-alone achievement, or be the first step to gaining a full first-aid qualification.

The scheme was based on the notion that Pact clients were constantly being delivered services, rather than feeling confident to help others, Mr Peppercorn said.

"Quite often, people think they just receive services, now they can offer something back."

About 40 clients in Dunedin and Balclutha had completed the course in the past fortnight.

The course potentially taught Pact clients to save a life, which was a special skill, he said.

Mr Peppercorn thanked First Aid Solutions for devising the programme at a vastly lower cost than other programmes.
