The business of bees was all the buzz at the New Zealand Science Festival in Dunedin yesterday.

A presentation on bees and the production of honey created a hive of activity in the Otago Daily Times festival headquarters in the Wall Street mall.

The "Blossom to Bread - the Science of Honey" presentation by New Zealand Honey Co, Otago beekeepers and the University of Otago included a close encounter with bees under a microscope and a demonstration of how honey is gathered and separated before bottling.

There was also an opportunity to inspect beekeeping equipment and sample different types of honey.

Bees have to visit up to two million flowers to make 1kg of honey, travelling 176,000km in the process, while a particularly busy bee can visit 250,000 flowers in one day.

The New Zealand Science Festival is on until Sunday.
