Police yesterday confirmed the male involved in the crash on State Highway 1, on the outskirts of Clinton, was a 17-year-old from Gore.
He was the sole occupant of the utility which rolled, throwing him from the vehicle, about 5am on Sunday. No other vehicles were involved.
Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Al Dickie said the young man remained in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit.
He was flown to the hospital in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries in the crash.
Inquiries into the cause of the crash were ongoing, however police did not believe alcohol was involved, Snr Sgt Dickie said.
``The investigation is still under way and we will await a report from the serious crash unit,'' he said.
``The vehicle is still to be inspected. It will be inspected this week.''
A police spokeswoman said the road, which was closed for much of the morning following the crash, would not need to be closed for further inspections.
