A woman remains in Dunedin Hospital with "moderate, to serious, non-life-threatening injuries" after yesterday's fatal crash at Moeraki Boulders turn off on State Highway 1, police say.
The name of the woman who died in the crash has yet to be released by police, but Detective Kevin Kirkman, of Oamaru said the 35-year-old woman in hospital was the lone passenger in the vehicle with the 39-year-old woman who died at the scene.
He said none of the six occupants of the three cars involved in yesterday's crash were from the Oamaru area, but declined to say where anyone was from and said he could not offer any further details about the crash as the police investigation was under way.
He could not speak about the make of the vehicles, or which direction they were travelling in at the time of the crash.
"We've still got to establish the exact circumstances of where people were going and exactly what's happened - that's still all under investigation,'' Det Kirkman said.
In a second vehicle at the crash about 3.30pm yesterday an 88-year-old man and an 83-year-old woman both suffered minor injuries and were admitted to Oamaru Hospital.
However, both were released today.
In the third car involved in the crash a 56-year-old man and 57-year-old woman suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Yesterday, head of Runaka o Moeraki David Higgins told the Otago Daily Times he was "surprised more people aren't killed" at the turn-off to Moeraki Boulders or the turn-off to the Moeraki township itself.
The entry point to Moeraki Boulders park had always been a ''bit difficult'' to get in and out of.
"People are travelling so fast [on State Highway 1]," he said.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has declined to comment on the crash today.
