Police are asking Dunedin residents to contact them if they hear unexpected knocks on their door.
The warning comes after a burglary in South Rd, Caversham, on Monday.
The occupant of the house was in bed about 11am when they heard a knock on the door, Acting Senior Sergeant Phill Hamlin, of Dunedin, said.
They ignored the knock and got up about an hour later to find the bathroom window had been forced open. The offender had left through the front door.
''There didn't appear to be anything taken,'' Snr Sgt Hamlin said.
However, the incident came as a reminder to be vigilant about people who looked out of place in the community or were going from door-to-door.
