Hundreds of enthusiasts descended on the town for the Kaitangata Car Show and Run, which was in its fifth year.
Show secretary Louise McLaren said it was a record turnout for the event as more than 480 cars registered for the show.
Cars lined the fields at the town’s rugby club before being driven around the district in the afternoon. Cars were also voted on by the public for a people’s choice award.
Ms McLaren said the winner of the "hard luck" award was a Valiant which "decided to catch fire" just before the afternoon drive.
Balclutha resident Sue Dowdell was at the event with her husband, Brian, and their two cars.
She said she liked the car show because anybody was allowed to enter.
Cars were not excluded from the event by their type or age.
"It’s anything goes," she said.
Mrs Dowdell said the event was run exceptionally well.
"I take my hat off to them [the organisers]."
Mrs Dowdell was decked in "plum crazy" coloured clothing to match the unique colour of her 1971 Dodge Challenger.
She and her husband bought it 14 years ago in Auckland and "drove it straight back home".
It was the first time she had brought the Challenger to the show.
Last year she brought their other vehicle, a Dodge Ram.
Ms McLaren said every year the show organisers gave the proceeds to a local organisation. This year the money raised would be donated to the Kaitangata Black Gold Museum and the Kaitangata Community Centre Charitable Trust.
The show also featured musical entertainment, a bouncy castle and children’s games as well as several craft and food stalls.
