The Cambridge rider sustained his injuries when he was dislodged from Art Protector in the open hurdles yesterday. Art Protector injured a foreleg and was put down.
Texas was brought down when Art Protector fell. Texas was not injured. His rider, George Strickland, was not injured but he was ruled out of riding in the next race because of the time involved in assessing his condition.
His mount, Real Chance, and James Bridge, who was to have been ridden by Cully, were late scratchings with no other suitable riders available.
Tom Hazlett was ruled out of riding at the Timaru meeting through an injury sustained at Awapuni on Saturday. He has a suspected ankle fracture.
He arrived back at Ashburton yesterday after spending six hours in the accident and emergency department of Palmerston North Hospital.
"I have a half cast on it and a bandage and they were talking surgery but I will know more when I see a specialist in Christchurch this week," Hazlett said last night.
"I am looking at being out for a month to six weeks."
Hazlett was injured when dislodged from Riverlea at the second fence in the Manawatu Steeplechase. Riverlea and Finito bumped and the latter fell.
The Manawatu Steeplechase was the best win for Cully, who boards with Graham Falconer, the co-owner of Logan James. The Irish rider had ridden Logan James to win over country at Wanganui last month.
Logan James, owned by Falconer and his daughter, Bridgette, and trained by Ross Elliot, has now won five steeplechases. The Falconers had given up on the horse after he only managed minor placings over hurdles They agreed to give Logan James away but the recipient failed to show.
It was then decided to try Logan James over country.
The Falconers bred Logan James from a mating of Yachtie and the Pompeii Court mare Lady Barrister. Falconer had his first win as an owner at Awapuni 36 years ago. Falconer was then living at Carterton and the horse was Fighting Spirit, trained by N. Dunstan at Clareville.
Falconer has been involved in the ownership of other horses, including Golden Casino and Pin Head. Golden Casino won 10 races in the 1990s when trained by Neil Hain. Falconer prepared Pin Head to win a steeplechase at Ruakaka in 1994. Falconer is now retired after operating a pet-food business.
• Murray Hamilton, the Omakau trainer, continued his run of success when he won both hurdles races yesterday. The winners, Magic Man and Kid Columbus, were ridden by Cambridge jockey Nathan Hanley.
• Chris Johnson was suspended from next Monday until July 4 inclusive for careless riding yesterday. Johnson, riding Showmaker, admitted shifting in at the 1000m and crowding Bounty Blue, Bent and Ballaphun.
Jason Laking, who rode three winners yesterday, was fined $200 for failing to make the weight for All Emotional.
Gioarchino was a late scratching when he was injured travelling to the meeting.
Yourtheman was a late scratching at the Manawatu meeting when he had a recurrence of an eye injury.
Michael Coleman, Rogan Norvall and Alvin Ng were each suspended from next Sunday until midnight on July 3 for careless riding at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Harry Kasim was fined $450 for excessive use of the whip on Darb And Marg.
Coleman (Salvatore) admitted crowding Oriental Lad at the 1000m. Norvall (Appleton's Lass) admitted shifting in on Midday Hero at the 150m.
Ng (My Lips Are Sealed) admitted shifting in at the 1000m, causing a check to Faalcon.
