Airlift from ship

An octogenarian cruise ship passenger was rushed to Dunedin Hospital as the result of a medical event yesterday.

The 80-year-old man was evacuated from the cruise ship MS Noordam, which was in Fiordland, about 5am yesterday following a medical event.

Cruise New Zealand executive officer Kevin O'Sullivan confirmed the man was a passenger on Noordam, which was due to arrive in Port Chalmers at 8.15am today.

Mr O'Sullivan would not comment on the man's medical issues because of privacy
but said it was not because of any form of illness.

''It's a medical problem of that particular patient,'' he said.

Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust chief pilot Graeme Gale confirmed that the ship was in Fiordland at the time the trust was called.

An intensive care team accompanied the helicopter and provided treatment during the man's transfer to Dunedin.
