Silver Fern Farms has confirmed the closure of its Mossburn venison processing plant in Northern Southland and Frasertown mutton processing plant at Wairoa.

Earlier this month, the company announced it was consulting staff on options for closing the two sites. Forty-three jobs are affected at Mossburn and 67 at Frasertown.

Mossburn employees were given options to work at the company's Waitane, Kennington or Finegand sites.

Yesterday, SFF chief executive Dean Hamilton said 18 affected workers were already working at either Waitane or Kennington.

Shifting to other sites was a good outcome for both the workers and for the company as it retained skilled staff.

''We're encouraging them [staff] to move with us,'' he said.

Frasertown employees had the option of transferring to Takapau or Pacific in Central Hawkes Bay and resource centres had been set up at the sites to assist staff through the transition.

Decommissioning of the Mossburn plant was likely to begin next month and there was ''no rush'' to do anything with the land, Mr Hamilton said.

Otago-Southland branch president of the New Zealand Meatworkers Union Daryl Carran cited the travelling distances to the other plants and questioned whether it would be sustainable for those wanting to remain living in the Mossburn community. Waitane was about 90km from Mossburn and Kennington was 100km away.

Mossburn was ''just a typical struggling little town'' and the announcement was ''pretty hard going'' for those affected, he
said.
